NEWSCAF and 1GOAL visit St Jean school in Libreville 02-07-2012
On the sidelines of the 2012 Orange Africa Cup of Nations currently going on in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea the Confederation of African Football and its partner in education for all campaign 1GOAL took time to visit and engage with the children at St Jean school in Libreville. International and local media were present at the primary school to cover the event that took place on Tuesday 7th February. CAF Secretary General Mr Hicham El Amrani brought with him two Gabonese national football team members Charly Moussono and Yves Bitseki Moto to the school where hundreds of children and staff welcomed them. 1GOAL is an official education campaign partner of the Confederation of African Football and together with the African Network Campaign for Education for All (ANCEFA) are campaigning to raise the profile of girls’ education amongst the public and world leaders. Mr El Amrani told the pupils that CAF and 1GOAL fully support efforts to get African children in school and is delighted to be working to highlight the desperate need to realize the right of girls everywhere to have a quality education. 1GOAL’s Shaharazad Abuel–Ealeh said 1GOAL believes that everyone has the right to good quality, free education – boys and girls alike. But right now, girls are falling behind and the majority of children out of school are girls. While there has been progress to get more girls enrolled in primary school, they are still more likely than boys to drop out of school before completion. In 47 out of 54 African countries, girls have less than a 50% chance of going to secondary school. The footballers also spoke words of encouragement to the children urging them to take their education seriously before posing for photographs with the children. The children had the opportunity to get autographs from Moussono and Moto before Mr El Amrani gave out match tickets for the semi-final to be played in Libreville much to the delight of the children. CAF and 1GOAL also gave away T-shirts and footballs to children and the school. |
