NEWSJoy and Pain as Ghana Premier League ends 05-28-2012
It was a feeling of joy and pain as the curtains on the 2011/2012 Ghana Premier League folded up on Sunday. With Asante Kotoko set to be crowned champions, attention was shifted on the battle for survival. Before the final round of matches, Wassaman United were very much aware that they will play a no part in the top flight next season. After the ultimate matches, Bechem United and Tudu Mighty Jets failed to beat the drop as they joined Wassaman United into the second-tier of Ghana football. Bechem United lost by a lone goal to Edubiase United away from home whilst a last-gasp equalizer saw Tudu Mighty Jets settling for a 1-1 draw with Berekum Chelsea. It was a narrow escape for Berekum Arsenal, also engulfed in the battle for survival after Hearts of Oak inflicted a 4-0 win on them. Berekum Arsenal finished on 16th position with 30 points, Wassaman United and Bechem United on 29 points apiece and Tudu Mighty Jets rooted at the depth of the 16-club league. Asante Kotoko ended the season on a high note with a lone goal victory over Tema Youth to finish on 63 points, 14-points richer than second placed AshantiGold. Hearts of Oak placed third on 47 points, with rising force Medeama SC and Edubiase United in that order on 46 points apiece. Former champions Aduana Stars and Berekum Chelsea finished sixth and seventh on 46-points apiece whilst Liberty Professionals occupied the eighth with 42-points. For Asante Kotoko, they have thus confirmed their status as the most successful club in the local league, winning their 21st title, one more than bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak. It was all joy at the Baba Yara Stadium as Asante Kotoko were presented with the trophy by President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi, assisted by Welbeck Abra-Appiah, Chairman of the Premier League Board (PLB). The trophy, clad in the colours of the Porcupine Warriors was presented to captain Isaac Amoako amidst cheers from the others members of the playing body. Asante Kotoko will play in next year’s Orange CAF Champions League. Revelation of the season, Emmanuel Baffour of Edubiase United finished as top scorer with 21-goals. |
