NEWSKenya Championship: Sofapaka FC dictates pace 07-03-2009
After a moths break, the Kenyan first division championship shall resume next weekend with many team aiming for the title. At the edn of the first phase of the championship, Sofakapa FC is leading the championship with 32 points after recording nine victories, three draws and three defeats. Last two season champions Tusker FC are in second position with two points adrift while Thika United, Nairobi City Stars and Chemelil Sugar follow in the pecking order. Gor Mahia is ranked sixth with while Mathare United, outgoing champions is in ninth position with twelve points. The most titled club in the East African country AFC Leopards (12 times champion), is ranked sixteenth half way into this years campaign. The team will need to work extra hard to move out of the relegation zone by the time the second phase wraps up if it is to avoid rellegation. Sofapaka FC, the unexpected leader of the championship is a club recently created by the Evangelical Church of Kenya in the early 2000s as a means of helping the underprivileged in that community. The team immediately made its mark winning the 2006 Presidents cup (formerly known as Moï Golden Cup. That year the team missed out on the ticket to the elite division just by a simple error and the following year emerged second division champions. Sofakapa FC is the best Kenyan club going by statistics in its first season in the elite championship. The team faces one of it main contenders Thika United during its first game of the second round. |
