NEWSCECAFA quarter finals begin to take shape 07-04-2009
The CECAFA/Kagame club cup championship has started to take its true bearing after Tusker, Mathare United both of Kenya, TP Mazembe of DRC and and KCC of Uganda stormed into the quarter finals on Friday. The contest for the remaining four slots will be confirmed between Staurday and Sunday when the group stage concludes. In a high scoring tournament, Tusker and Mazembe showed their true championship pedigree with stunning wins and sounded a tough warning to their next opponents. In Khartoum, Mazembe beaten 3-2 by KCC in their opening match on 1.7.2009, made no mistake when they took on Benadir of Somalia Friday overuning the Somalia outfit 8-1 in a group B showdown. And in Port Sudan, defending Champions Tusker led by Nigerian striker Joseph Emeka routed Miembeni of Zanzibar 6-0 in a group C match. Emeka, leading scorer in the Kenyan premier scored twice as the Kenyan club swept to the top of the group overthrowing Miembeni who had occupied the spot for two days. And in another group C match hosts second club Hay Al Arab surrendered a 1-0 lead to settle for a 1-1 draw with Burundi's Inter Stars. KCC of Uganda led by Antony Bongole swept into the quarter finals after a convincing 3-1 victory over Prisons of Tanzania.After four days of action, Mathare United, Tusker, KCC and Mazembe have booked their quarter final slots. |
