Ethiopian champs fall to APR in build-up

Ethiopian league champions St. George FC will have to go back to the drawing board ahead of their CAF Orange Champions league first round encounter after losing 1-0 to hosts APR in Kigali on Saturday.

Coach Micho Milutin Sredojovic told Cafonline.com that although they lost the game, it was a good wake-up call. “The game helped us to identify our problems and strong points,” said Sredojovic, also a former coach of SC Villa (Uganda), Orlando Pirates (South Africa) and Young Africans in Tanzania.

Rwanda champions APR who dominated the contest, took an early lead when striker Emmanuel Sebanani side-stepped St. George’s and former APR goalkeeper Aime Ndizeye to put the military side ahead after only 10 minutes.

The visitors never threatened APR’s goal until the introduction of St. George’s new signing and former Rwanda Jimmy Gatete in the second half.

The striker who scored the vital goal that dumped Uganda and took Rwanda to the 2004 Africa Nations Cup kept the APR back-line on their toes with his pace and good movement. He missed two clear chances but the packed stadium cheered him on.
Following the win, APR’s head coach Erik Paske believes his guns can oust their Orange Champions League first round opponents Recreativo de Libolo. “I’m glad with how we performed against St.George. We are ready for the champions league tie,” he vowed.
