UNOCA and CAF will work together to promote peace and security in Central Africa

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), Mr. Abou Moussa, and the President of the African Football Confederation (CAF), Mr. Issa Hayatou, met on Tuesday 7 February in Libreville, on the margins of the 28 th   African Cup of Nations (CAN) co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The two officials agreed on the principle to take common actions to promote peace and security in Central Africa. In this regard, the President of CAF expressed his readiness to receive the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in his office in Yaoundé (Cameroon) to define the terms of a partnership.
"CAF will be with you to secure, consolidate or promote peace, which is a noble cause", assured Mr. Issa Hayatou, indicating that after the CAN 2012, a working session between UN experts and those of the CAF would help to find the best formula to better intervene in this field.
The CAF President also expressed his appreciation to the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the great attention he pays to the activities of the African Football Confederation. Mr. Abou Moussa has indeed convened to Mr. Issa Hayatou encouragement of Mr. Ban Ki-moon "for his leadership for the development of the African football and his investment in humanitarian causes."
The Special Representative of UN Secretary-General and Head of UNOCA also appreciated the spirit that prevails since the beginning of the CAN 2012. "Players, spectators and all others involved in the tournament so far have shown a remarkable fair play. The climate of peace that results is a credit to the continent in general and Central Africa in particular", said Mr. Abou Moussa.
On 21 January, the Special Representative of UN Secretary-General for Central Africa had, already, appealed "for the spirit of tolerance and unity to prevail throughout the 28 th edition of the CAN, in accordance with the ideals of the United Nations in favour of the sport for peace and development”.
