NEWSThe media express satisfaction 02-08-2012
The international media have been fulsome in their praise for the press facilities in Gabon, where the standard of the World Cup has been introduced to the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. A massive media centre in Libreville, with state of the art facilities, free communications and ample catering, has proven a popular workroom for journalists from across the world that are covering the 28th edition of the tournament. The hospitality of the Gabonese has also been commended with journalists keenly attended by a bevy of friendly-faced volunteers. Gabon’s COCAN have pulled out all the stops replicating the same facilities from the last World Cup in South Africa and even publishing a daily newspaper. “Organisers have gone out of their way to try to solve problems,” said Peter auf der Heyde of the German agency DPA. “The media facilities provided at this competition are on par - if not better - with any other facilities at previous competitions.” Ugandan journalist Fred Musisi of the Monitor said facilities had been perfect for his work requirements. “The tribune set up in the stadiums is excellent and the work stations in the press centre perfect. This is so far better than we have had before,” he said. Regular flights between all four of the venues – Bata, Franceville, Libreville and Malabo -- has also made work much easier for the media seeking to watch as many games as possible. Many have made use of the COCAN chartered jets to get around the four venues as often as possible. “It’s been quite an experience to be able to fly around with that amount of ease,” said photographer Sydney Mahlangu of the agency backpagepix.com. “I’ve been very impressed by the facilities which are conducive to being able to work as if one were in a proper newsroom environment,” added veteran TV presenter Thomas Kwenaite from the SuperSport show ‘Soccer Africa’. “The internet access is spot on and the environment in the media area very pleasant. I hope that this sets the standard for future Africa Cup of Nations.” |
