NEWSHarambee Stars hold Tanzania 08-12-2010
Jan Poulsen’s reign as Taifa Stars coach got off to a less than emphatic start as he watched his side settle for a 1-1 draw against star-studded Kenya’s Harambee Stars in an international friendly match on Wednesday. Kenyan ace Macdonald Mariga who plays for European champions Inter Milan put the visitors ahead on 13th minute at the historic Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, but a second half strike from Mrisho Ngasa ensured the two teams share the spoils. Poulsen, appointed as Marcio Maximo’s successor last month, opted to start with Nurdin Bakari, Abdi Kassim and Jabir Aziz in midfield but the trio were unable to spark in the opening half that Harambee Stars looked far more accomplished side than the home team. Kenya head coach Tahir Muhidin had promised to field his two renowned professional players, Mariga and Dennis Oliech and he lived up to his promise and the pair did not disappoint as they gave Taifa Stars defence a torrid first half. Mariga made his presence felt from the kick off with Stars players finding his muscular frame hard to handle as Kenya dominated the opening exchange. He forced a smart save with a powerful low shot after nine minutes, resulting to fruitless corner. Stars defenders found Oliech handful and were caught on the trap of fouling him. While Nsajigwa’s pull on the Auxere striker went unpunished when Mariga’s free-kick narrowly missed the target, the second set-piece beat Kado on the far post to give Kenya a deserved lead. Poulsen made his first change barely after 27 minutes, substituting Jerryson Tegete for Musa Hassan ‘Mgosi’. In the 57th minute Ngassa lifted the home crowd when he latched into long ball that split open Kenya’s otherwise water-tight defence, before slotting the ball into the back of the net. That served a wake up call for Muhidin’s side and Oliech went close twice shortly after the hour mark before Kevin Omondi struck the crossbar with powerful header from Oliech’s corner. |
