NEWS Togo neutralised by Morocco 09-07-2009
Togo kept their hope alive of qualifying for the World Cup after a one all draw with visiting Morocco in Lome on Sunday. Moustapha Salifou scored after just three minutes with his strike proving to be their only goal of the end of the game. The Aston Villa maskman benefited from an inspired onslaught to score but Morocco came back strong. Togo started the game with much determination and they created several chances. Emmanuel Adebayor and co. had to sweat to keep their lead with a resurgent Moroccan side. Striker Marouane Chamakh led the Moroccan attack but he failed to create an impression in front of a determined opponent at the stade Kégué in Lome . Morocco woke up from slumber and virtually laid a siege in the Togolese vital zone. Youssef Hadji at the 36th minute and Chamakh Marouane four minutes later failed to draw level. The 1 – 0 score sent the two sides into the break. Togo came back more determined but all their efforts were not good enough to be compensated with a goal. Nibombé Daré, Serge Akakpo, Romao Alaixys, Kader Coubadja and Thomas Dossevi had to work hard to prevent the hosts from conceding a goal. The Atlas lions led by Benjelloune Abdessalam found it hard to erase the deficit with a determined Togolese defense till the dying moments of the game when Adel Taarabt scored to ensure the Atlas Lions do not return empty handed. The game ended 1-1 leaving Togo second in the group pending the results of the delayed game between Cameroon and Gabon on Wednesday September 9 in Yaoundé. |
