Ghana’s Black Stars becomes the first African side to qualify for the 2010 World Cup/Orange Africa Cup of Nations after beating Sudan 2-0 on Sunday in a Group D clash. The Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire also moved within touching distance of securing places at the two tourneys, whilst Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles and the Desert Foxes of Algeria kept alive their hopes. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon also revived their hopes with a shocking 2-0 win over the Panthers of Gabon in Libreville, just as the Mambas of Mozambique and the Flames of Malawi claimed their maiden wins at this stage. Group A Cameroon claimed their first win of the campaign with a surprising 2-0 win over Gabon at the Omar Bongo Stadium thanks to second half strikes from Achille Emana and Samuel Eto’o on Saturday. The result keeps the group wide after the Atlas Lions of Morocco held the Togolese Hawks to a one all draw in Lome on Sunday. Adel Taarabt scored two minutes into stoppage time after Aston Villa midfielder Moustapha Salifou had put the Hawks in the lead on four minutes. Gabon leads the pack on six points, a point richer than Togo, Cameroon on four points and Morocco on three points. On Wednesday, Cameroon will host Gabon in a day four clash. Midfielder Oussama Daragi’s late equalizer stunned the packed crowd at the Abuja National Stadium after Michael Eneramo 80th minute effort put victory in sight. Light-skinned midfielder Peter Odemwingie broke the deadlock on 24 minutes before Nabil Taider drew parity 60 seconds later. Prior to that, Manuel Tico Tico had powered the Mammas to a lone goal victory over the Harambee Stars of Kenya in Maputo. With two games remaining, Tunisia remain at the summit of the standings on eight points, two more than closest contenders, Nigeria with Mozambique and Kenya in that order on four and three points respectively. The outcome of the match dented the hopes of African champions, Egypt, who silenced the Amavubi Stars of Rwanda by a lone goal in Kigali. Rafik Saifi’s 57th minute effort was enough for Desert Foxes whilst Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan was the hero in their victorious trip to Eastern Africa netting the match winner on 67 minutes.
