Countdown to Angola 2010: Togo, worst opponent of Ivory Coast?
12-23-2009

Ivory Coast and Ghana have since the draws for the 2010 Orange African Cup of Nations been rated favourites of Group B. But the group also has two other West African football nations Burkina Faso and Togo. In Abidjan, Ivory Coast’s main city many a football observer have been cautious when referring to Togo. Past records show that every time the Elephants meet Togo in the same Group at the Orange African Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast has never gone pass the group stages. In 1984, Ivory Coast was drawn in the same group as Togo, Cameroon and Egypt, and the team ended the first round in the third position. In 2000, in Ghana, it was the same as the Elephants finished in third place in a Group that had host Ghana, Cameroon and Togo. And lastly in 2002 in Mali, the Hawks were drawn with DR Congo, Ivory Coast and Cameroon and the elephants finished at the bottom of the Group. But the stakes are no longer the same as Ivory Coast is now being rated as one of the big football nations on the continent.
