The Big Challenge for Amodu Shuaibu
12-24-2009

The Nigerian Coach, Shuaibu Amodu knows that he will not be permitted to make any error in Angola if he hopes to stay at the helm of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in June in South Africa. He needs, at least, to reach the semi-final if he doesn’t want his mandate at the helm of the team be put into doubt.
He has to, first of all, survive in Group C and with his matches against Egypt, Mozambique and Benin then go ahead to get rid of the first or second of Group B in which feature Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Togo.
Nigeria has recorded its worst performance since 1988 in the final phase of the CAN during the last edition in Ghana where it was eliminated at the quarter final by Ghana (1-2). The team was then coached by the German, Berti Vogts.
From 1988 to 2006, Nigeria recorded a series of impressive performances with one title (1994), three finals (1988, 1990 and 2000) and four third places (1992, 2002, 2004 and 2006). In 1996, Nigeria had refused to play the CAN in South Africa, and in 1998, it was suspended by CAF for boycotting two years earlier.
Shuaibu Amodu knows what is expected of him. Under his tutelage, the team has lost only one of 17 matches played. The defeat was on November 14, 2008, during a friendly encounter in Cali against Columbia (0-1).
