NEWSPresidential reward for Ghana’s Black Stars 02-04-2010
Ghana President John Evans Atta Mills has announced a $20,000 package to the playing body of the Black Stars for their impressive performance at the just ended Orange Africa Cup of Nations, Angola 2010. The Black Stars lost 0-1 to Egypt in the final, but their performance was the most shocking at the tournament as one gave the team a dog’s chance to reach far, without several key players. President Mills announced the reward to the team at a luncheon on Tuesday at the Osu Castle, seat of Government. He said that the package was in recognition of the team’s performance at the championship, that pitted the best 16 teams on the continent together. Seven members of the technical team also received $20,000 each. Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of Ghana Football Association (GFA) commended the Government for honour bestowed on the team for their output at the tournament. He observed that the package will go a long way to motivate other national teams to give of their best in future international competitions. Few months ago, Ghana U-20 team, Black Satellites were also honoured by President Mills for emerging victors at the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in Egypt. Earlier, the team was met with a rapturous welcome at the kotoka International Airport on Monday night. Hundreds of fans clad in the national colours were present at the team as they sang and danced to victorious tunes as they players stepped out of the Angolan Airline chartered flight. Also present were Government officials who showered congratulatory messages on the playing body for their sterling performance at the 27th edition of the Africa’s showpiece soccer event. This was the first since 1992 that the Black Stars had reached the final of the biennial competition. |
