Criteria for Orange CAN 2012 draw

The 44 teams were seeded into four groups (pots)

Pot 1 (Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, Zambia, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Tunisia)

The teams were seeded based on their ranking at the 27th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, Angola 2010.

Pot 2, 3 and 4 teams were determined based on the latest FIFA rankings.

Pot 2 (Morocco, Benin, Uganda, South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique, Guinea, Senegal, Gambia, Cape Verde, Congo)

Pot 3 (Rwanda, Tanzania, Sudan, Namibia, DR Dongo, Kenya, Libya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone)

Pot 4 (Swaziland, Chad, Burundi, Madagascar, Liberia, Niger, Comoros, Mauritius, Mauritania, Central African Republic, Guinea Bissau)

Meanwhile, Djibouti, Eritrea, Lesotho, Sao Tome, Seychelles and Somalia did not enter into the competition.

The teams were drawn into eleven groups of four teams each and will play each other on a round-robin basis. The winners of each group will qualify for the finals as well as the three best second placed teams.

Equatorial Guinea
and Gabon qualify automatically as co-hosts.
