The Rwanda Football Association (Ferwafa) has named English coach Stephen Constantine as the new head coach the national football team, Amavubi.

Speaking to Cafonline on Wednesday, Ferwafa president Vincent Degaule Nzamwita said, “Constantine was the suitable coach picked by the assessment committee after reviewing all the seven coaches who had been shortlisted.”

Nzamwita said talks with Constantine will be finalised over the weekend in Tunisia where Rwanda is scheduled to face Libya in the first leg of the first round of qualifiers of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2015.

“We have talked and agreed in principle with Constantine to take over the job. We will meet in Tunisia before our game against Libya because he wishes to watch the game before we can conclude all the contract details,” Nzamwita said adding: "After sorting out all these details, Constantine will be unveiled as the head coach probably at the start of next week. But we can confirm Constantine will take over the vacant Amavubi head coach post."

Constantine who has been among the front runners for the Amavubi coaching job because of his vast and wealthy football resume, will take over from Eric Nshimiyimana whose one-year reign expired in April.

He beat six other international coaches to the post namely; English Peter James Butler, Serbian Ratomir Djukovic, Kim Poulsen (Denmark), Wojciek Lazarek (Poland), Paolo Cesar Lopez (Brazil) and Desi Curry (Ireland).

He has managed the national sides of Nepal (1999-2001), India (2002-05), Malawi (2007-08) and Sudan in 2009. He was the first team coach of the English Championship side Millwall for the 2005/06 season.

Most recently, he managed Nea Salamis in the Cypriot First Division, guiding them to promotion from the Cypriot Second Division. He holds the Uefa pro licence, and, as a member of Fifa’s elite coaches’ panel, runs courses around the world for coaches and instructors.

Assistant coach Andre Cassa Mbungo will manage Sunday’s 2015 Africa Nations Cup qualifier away to Libya. He will be assisted by Vincent Mashami and goalkeeper’s coach Ibrahim Mugisha.
