Since taking over the helm of Burkina Faso, Portuguese Tactician Paulo Duarte has had a perfect run in the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup and African Nations cup. With just hours to the crucial match against Ivory Coast the trainer looks at the stakes ahead of the game and the entire group.

After two victories in your first two outings in the group, can we say that Burkina Faso is a serious contender for the lone ticket for the World Cup in Group E of the qualifiers?

Paulo Duarte: We have won two games against Guinea and Malawi which should permit us to have ambitions to be at the World Cup. It will not be an easy task even though our other objective of being at the 2010 African Cup is already being achieved 95%. Now we are in a good position alongside Ivory Coast (the two teams have the same number of points 6 in total but Ivory Coast has a better goal advantage). We shall strive to win all our matches

What made the difference in your last two games?

The difference was the attitude of our team which has been good. We have a mentally strong side which is like a family and the star of our team is the group. We are able to come this far because of the organization and discipline within the team. That is the secret of Burkina Faso which makes everything possible.

During the third playing day of the qualifiers you will be hosting Cote d’Ivoire. How do you rate the encounter?

It will be a great encounter with an exceptional Ivorian team with good players among the best on the continent. It will be a difficult game for us. Burkina Faso is a team that is respected by all and which tries to win all its matches. The past of the team does not reflect the reality of today and all teams which come our way must be careful. I hope we have a good game and that Burkina Faso comes out on top.

Some form of rivalry exists between the two sides especially at the moment. Don’t you think it will bring some kind of extra pressure to your team?

I am comfortable with such situations, just as my players. I think the rivalry is at the level of supporters because at a certain point in the past the two countries were one. It’s normal that rivalry should exist in football. We shall tackle the game with a very strong spirit.

What will make the difference in the game according to you?

It will be the team which commits the least number of faults. At this level of the competition with the calibre of players only the team which concentrates better will make the difference. Any slip may be a catastrophic.

Are you just focused on the prospect victory ahead of the game?

I think of victory in all matches that I have played in my career even though I know it is not possible. I will never tell my players to defend so we can have a draw game. We play a match to win and against Ivory Coast we shall do our best to win. I always ask my players to do their best and when they do we always get victories.

You have just signed for French Ligue 1 side Le Mans and will stay as coach of Burkina Faso. How do you plan to manage this situation taking into account that the Stallions will be in Angola 2010?

I hope all shall be well with Le Mans and I will honour my contract with the team as expected. I will be there for all the matches for the qualification for the World Cup as well as prepare the team for the final phase of the African cup. That was my condition before signing with Le Mans and the president understood it.
