Ghana’s Black Stars moved within touching distance of a place at the 2010 World Cup and Africa cup of Nations after a 2-0 win over Sudan in Omdurman last Saturday. With three wins from three games and yet to concede, Head Coach Milovan Rajevac tells www.cafonline.com the journey is half way through and there is still more to do in the remaining three games. Rajevac’s team leads the pack in Group D on nine points, five richer than Mali, with Benin and Sudan in that order on three and one point respectively. Cafonline.com caught up with the Serb moments after the team's arrival from Omdurman and below is excerpts: Cafonline.com: What does the win over Sudan mean to your qualification for next year’s World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations? Milovan Rajevac: The win is a big boost for our qualification especially for the next World Cup. It was a very important result and a big win. Grabbing all the three points away is very crucial and a giant leap towards South Africa 2010. What worked for your team in Omdurman? It was a very difficult game. There are different climatic conditions in Sudan and we tried to acclimatize with a training camp in Kenya in the buildup to the game and it proved useful. The Sudanese are a very strong and tactical side with an entirely home-based squad. Our target was to repeat the result in Mali two weeks ago and worked towards that. Most football fans say the Stars are through as far as the World Cup is concerned. Do you share a similar opinion? For now, I can’t say we are there yet. We have done a good job till this stage. Now it is half time and we are 50 percent through. There are three matches left and the results will also be crucial to our qualification process. How are you approaching the remaining three games? The next match is in September and we have little time to rest. After the rest, we will plan for the next game against Sudan in Accra. We will treat the remaining games equally as we cannot afford any slip at this stage. Some key players including Captain Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari among others have been unavailable for your last two games. Any chance for them in the remaining matches? Of course, there is still chance for other players. We are still monitoring the performance of all eligible players. It is a different situation altogether when playing at home and away, and surely there will be some new faces in the other games. Also, players who were not available for the Mali and Sudan games will return for the rest of the qualifiers. In their absence, you seem satisfied with the performance of this current team? Three wins from three games and yet to concede a goal, what more can we ask of a team. I am very satisfied with the performance of the team till this stage. The journey is half way through and we hope to finish in style. |
