NEWS Somalia eject Djibouti in CHAN qualifier 01-11-2010
Somalia have qualified for the next round of the CHAN (African Nations Championships 2011) qualifiers after a 1-0 win over home side Djibouti in a match played on Friday. The Djibouti/Somalia preliminary round match was played as a one-off tie in Djibouti because war-torn Somalia are unable to host international football fixtures. Osman Yusuf scored the winner for Somalia in the 73rd minute, 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute. Somalia therefore move to the first round where the pairings are: Somalia v Tanzania, Uganda v Burundi, Kenya v Ethiopia, Rwanda v Eritrea. A delighted Somalia Football Association official said the win was sweet revenge because in 2007 Djibouti won a similar tie at home 1-0 to eliminate the Somalis from the 2010 African Nations Cup/World Cup qualifying campaign. The tournament, inaugurated in 2009 when the finals were held in Cote d'Ivoire, is for African national teams made up of players in their respective domestic leagues only. The last two teams in the home and away knockout tournament will represent the Cecafa region in the CHAN finals to be held in Sudan in 2011. The inaugural edition involved eight teams but in Sudan there will be 16 teams. Each CAF (African Football Confederation) zone will produce two teams to join the hosts. With Sudan qualifying automatically, the Cecafa region will, therefore, have three teams. |
