CHAN 2014 qualifier draw set for Cairo
The draw for the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers will take place in Cairo at CAF HQ on 6th of September at 2.00pm. The third edition of CHAN scheduled to take place in South Africa 2014 will see teams drawn on a regional basis.
Thirty-eight (38) teams have registered to participate in the 2014 CHAN competition. Among these countries are Eritrea, Ethiopia and Mauritania whose suspension has been lifted by CAF Executive Committee paving way for the trio to take part in the draw. For the first time ever the CHAN rankings will be used to determine the seeding during the draw. The final sixteen (16) teams to qualify for South Africa 2014 will be made up from: two from North Zone, two from West A Zone, three from West B Zone, three from Central Zone, three from Central East and three from South Zone (including hosts South Africa).
DR Congo won the inaugural CHAN tournament played in Cote d’ Ivoire in 2009 and Tunisia were the winners of the 2011 competition held in Sudan. The maiden CHAN tournament had eight finalists but since Sudan 2011 the number of teams making the finals has been doubled to sixteen.
