NEWSTanzania, Zambia in must-win clash 02-27-2009
The Taifa Stars of Tanzania and the Chipolopolo of Zambia will meet in a heated tie on Saturday in the final Group A fixture of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cote D’Ivoire. The clash billed for the Stade de la Paix, Bouake, will determine the Group’s qualified teams for the semi-finals of the competition designed exclusively for footballers playing in their local leagues. Senegal will play hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the group’s other clash at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, but the fact the hosts are just playing for pride makes the Bouake clash decisive. Both teams, Zambia and Tanzania, have been described as one the tactically disciplined sides at the tournament, and its very unfortunate that one of them will have to bid farewell to the competition, with result of the Senegal-Cote D’Ivoire game in mind. Incidentally, the two sides also beat host nation and only an improved performance for the maximum points will prove to all that output was no fluke. The two teams participated in the CECAFA Cup last January in Uganda, with Tanzania placing claiming bronze, but the CHAN is a different level and past glories cannot bu used as the measuring rod. Though the two sides did not come face-to-face at the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup won by Uganda (hosts), they have an idea of each others tactics and are expected to exploit them. The Zambian have managed to con some of the home fans with their superlative display and that will make them feel at home against the Taifa Stars who traveled with a handful of supporters. Zambia coach Herve Renard will be relying on the scoring exploits of tournament sensation Given Singuluma to sink the Tanzanians, and has cautioned his players against complacency knowing that at least a draw will take them through. “They are a tactical side, I saw them at the CECAFA tournament and they have some wonderful players. “I expect more players to up their game after the sluggish output against Senegal. Our aim is to qualify and we aim to achieve that.” For his counterpart, Marcio Maximo, he will be relying on the experience gathered by his team to claim the maximum points. “ We have to win to qualify and it is not beyond us. If the Zambia I saw in the CECAFA is anything to go by, then they are beatable” For other clash, Senegal needs at least a draw to claim a next round berth. |
