Deja vu for Senegal and Zambia
03-06-2009

Semi-final losers, Senegal and Zambia will meet in the third-place match at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.

The clash expected to set the stage for the final game 24-hours after will also present both teams an opportunity of returning to their respective countries with at least a bronze medal.

The clash is a repeat of the Group A second day match which ended barren, but this time, there must be a winner.

The coaches of the two sides, Joseph Koto (Senegal) and Herve Renard (Zambia) face a difficult task of building up their players after the disappointment of having lost out on a place in the grand finale.

But the performance exhibited by the two teams at the competition so far is enough to anticipate a highly competitive clash.

From their earlier meeting, both teams have an idea of each others tactics and it behooves on the coaches to exploit the weaknesses on the other to claim the bronze.

Zambian coach, Renard relishes stiff opposition from the Teranga Lions in the battle for the bronze medal at the competition designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.

“Senegal is a strong side and they posed tough opposition in our first meeting. They are strong, physical and tactically disciplined.

“But our target is finish third, and we can only achieve that by beating them, and we hope to do that.”

His Senegalese counterpart, Koto has also expressed optimism in his team’s ability to claim the bronze after missing out on the diadem.

“We want to return home with a medal after missing out the trophy. I have seen Zambia and they are one of the strongest teams at the tournament.

“I am very convinced we can beat them to the third-place.”

The comments of the technical brains make the clash a must-see and certainly the pitch will be the judge.

On Sunday at the same venue, Ghana will square DR Congo in the grand finale of the inaugural CHAN tournament.
