NEWSWho lifts the trophy: Ghana or DR Congo? 03-07-2009
The maiden edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will reach its climax on Sunday with the final clash between Ghana’s Black Stars and the Leopards of DR Congo. The clash billed for the Felix Houphouet Stadium in the Ivorian economic capital, Abidjan, will bring down the curtains on the competition designed exclusively for local based footballers. This is certainly the moment all football fans have been waiting for, and the clash between two of the finest sides in the competition has been described a befitting package for the closure of the tournament. The clash is a repeat of the group phase clash at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake, which the Black Stars won 3-0, and the defeat remains the only loss for the Leopards in their campaign. The two teams are both experiencing a feel of déjà vu ahead of their final clash, with the Ghanaians eyeing an encore; and the Congolese, revenge. After brushing past Senegal and Zambia to claim to this far, the journey of each of the sides wont be complete without the ultimate. Black Stars coach, Milovan Rajevac has described the clash is a dicey one and will approach the game with a high level of caution. The Serbian claims the fact that his team beat the Leopards in their earlier meeting isn’t a guarantee for another victory in the final. “DR Congo is a strong side and tactically disciplined. They will come stronger this time, and we must be cautious. “The game will be tough and we hope to be winners at the end,” Milovan added. For his counterpart, Mutunbile Santos believes the loss in the group phase has toughened them for the final battle. "This is a tough test, and I am looking forward to a win this time. We have identified the causes of the 0-3 loss, and it will be a different story this time. “Our target is the trophy. We are in the final and we must win to achieve that.” For historical purposes, DR Congo beat Ghana 1-0 the grand finale of the 1968 African Cup of Nations, thanks to Pierre Kalala’s goal. The two sides are also chasing history by becoming the first team to win the CHAN tournament. |
