NEWSAfrican Women’s Championship 2010 Appeal 11-09-2010
African Women’s Championship 2010 Appeal Give AIDS the Red Card To prevent mothers from dying and babies from becoming infected with HIV As captains and players of teams competing in the 2010 African Women’s Championship in South Africa, we appeal to football players and fans across Africa to celebrate life and help prevent mothers from dying and babies from becoming infected with HIV. We stand with captains of the participating teams and UNAIDS and its partners to strive for an HIV-free generation. During a 90-minute football match almost 80 babies will become newly infected, and each day nearly 1200 babies are born with HIV worldwide, most of them in Africa. Often, they and their mothers are not getting lifesaving treatment. We can save babies and their mothers from HIV by providing counseling and testing for pregnant women and their partners, and treatment if needed. Together we must Give AIDS the Red Card to prevent mothers from dying and babies from becoming infected with HIV. |
