Algeria crush hosts 7-1

Algeria stormed into the semi-finals of the All Africa Games Women’s Tournament with 7-1 trouncing of hosts Mozambique.

Benziane Naima Bouhani and Djamila Marek both netted braces as the North Africans progress to the knockout stages as runners up to Cameroon, where they will take on either South Africa or Ghana as the Group B winners in Tuesday’s last four pairing.

It was a game of two halves as Mozambique held their own against their more fancied opponents in the first period but crumbled in the second conceding six goals.

Mozambique, using their local knowledge of the artificial surface at Machava Stadium, took control of the game in the early exchanges but against the run of play conceded a goal when Algeria scored through Bouhani in the 24^th minute.

But the hosts fought back gamely and deservedly equalised when their inspirational captain, Maria Mutola, scored just before the break to send the teams into the changeroom for the half time break on an even keel.

The home team’s confidence received a knock when, once again after a sustained period of possession, they conceded at the other end of the field when Leila Meflah scored in the 52nd minute.

Mozambique pushed players forward in search for an equaliser but exposed themselves in defence and Fethia Bekhedda exploited the gaps to score Algeria’s third in the 60^th minute.

The fight went out of Mozambique as Marek helped herself to a brace and Bouhani added to her tally in a seven-minute goal-blitz.

Substitute Farida Yahi added salt to wounds of the host nation with a seventh in referee’s option time.
