NEWSOtoo hat-trick hero, as Ghana oust Mozambique 09-10-2011
Osumanu Otoo scored a first half hat-trick as Ghana beat Mozambique 4-3 in the All Africa Games Mens Tournament at Machava Stadium, on Saturday afternoon. In arguably the match of the tournament so far, the seven-goal thriller had all the ingredients for a humdinger, with the added suspense of a host nation trying to remain in the tournament. The Mozambique women’s team had exited the tournament earlier in the day in an unsavory fashion, losing 7-1 to Algeria and the men’s team seemed poised to follow a similar embarrassing path when they went into the break 3-0 down, courtesy of a hat-trick by Osumanu Otoo. The young striker used a combination of individual skill and slack marking from his opponents to register goals in the 8th, 15th and 25th minutes to stun the home supporters. Coach Mart Nooij would have had some strong words to his team at half time and they answered his call by taking the game to the Ghanaians in the second period and scored through Manuel Uetimane in the 62nd minute to make it 3-1. But a minute later their defensive frailty came to the fore once again when Gilbert Fiamenyo stretched Ghana’s lead once again. More drama then unfolded when Manuel Fernandes and Jonas Tomocene scored to set up an intriguing final 10 minutes. Unfortunately time ran out and the host team are out of the semifinals on a day which Mozambique football will wish to forget.
