NEWSCameroon sink Senegal. 09-11-2011
Cameroon secured the three points they needed to win Group B of the All Africa Games Men Tournament when they beat Senegal 1-0 at the Maxaquene Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Both teams had already booked their places in the final four at the expense of Uganda in the three-team group, but faced off to decide the final standings on the table. The game followed the pattern of the previous two games in the Group where a direct, physical approach was considered at a higher premium than keeping the ball in possession. The game was a scrappy encounter as both teams tried to assert their physical domination of the other and referee Hamada Nampiandraza had his hands full keeping the players in check through warning and cards. It came at a price, as the match was a stop-start affair. In the 19th minute Cameroon took the lead when Justin Mengolo played an enticing square ball into the area. Senegal keeper Ousmane Mane looked to have it covered but he fumbled it allowing Jacques Nguemaleu to score the all-important goal It was a wake up call for the Senegalese who started playing more attractive football in the latter stages of the first period. Cameroon ‘s sound defence kept Senegal at bay in the second half and frustrated them going forward. The situation got to Stephane Badji, who was sent off late in the period, as Cameroon held on for the win. The semifinals has thrown up two contrasting styles in both games, with the defensive-minded Cameroon and Senegal teams coming up against their attack-minded Ghanaian and South African counterparts. It promises to be intriguing contests between offense and defence at the Maxaquene Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Kick Off times are 14.30 local Mozambique time.
