Ghana win All Africa Games Gold Medal
09-17-2011

Ghana won their first All Africa Games title when they beat South Africa 4-2 on penalties in the final played at the national Stadium in Maputo, on Saturday night.

South Africa seemed destined to win the gold medal when Riaan Eugene scored in the 86th minute but they conceded a controversial penalty in referee’s optional time, which Osumanu Otoo converted to send the game into extra time.

With no breakthrough being made in the additional 30 minutes penalties were need to decide the outcome and misses from Jabulani Shongwe and Eugene gifted Ghana the gold medal.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Ghana, whose women’s team lost their final against Cameroon earlier in the day.

After a slow opening 10 minutes, Ghana began to assert their presence in the midfield and had their first chance at goal in the 14th minute. Richard Mpong broke free of his markers in the area and fired in a shot but it went straight at Nhlanhla Khuzwayo and the keeper was able to deflect it over the crossbar.

With a brisk wind at their backs Ghana kept the pressure on the South African rearguard but found Lehlogonolo Masalesa and Thamsanqa Sangweni in uncompromising mood as they dealt with the high balls that were played into the area.

Ghana made the mistake of persisting with the aerial route to goal, when they were more effective going forward with the ball at their feet.

In the 40th minute Otoo played in a dangerous cross, which Gilbert Fiamenyo got to before Sibusiso Mxoyana but his headed effort was well saved by Khuzwayo.

The teams went into the break level with South Africa enjoying the majority of possession, but Ghana having the better chances to break the deadlock.

In the 69th minute Shongwe played in Phumulele Bhengu through on goal but the striker hit his shot  at Daniel Agyei when a better option would have been to place it past the Ghanaian keeper.

Ghana counter attacked and Otoo’s shot deflected off Katlego Pule and skimmed the woodwork. The West Africans kept the pressure on and in 81st minute came close when Otoo’s thunderous shot cannoned off the crossbar.

With the match heading for extra time, South Africa took the lead when Themba Zwane raced in on goals and drove  in a shot, which was blocked by Agyei, but the ball fell kindly for Eugene to score his first goal of the tournament.

Deep in referee’s optional time Wilson Mkhwanazi was adjudged to have fouled Gilbert Fiamenyo in the area. It appeared that the defender had played the ball but referee Janny Sikazwe of Zambia pointed to the spot and Otoo stepped up and buried the ball past Khuzwayo to send the game into extra time.

Ghana seized the momentum of the late equaliser,  and with South Africa’s minds on what might have been, controlled the match but could not make their possession count.

South Africa were on the back foot early in the shootout after Shongwe missed the target, not even forcing Agyei into a save.

The pressure then got to Eugene, as his effort was well saved by Agyei, allowing Ahmed Adam to scored the winning penalty to give Ghana gold.
