 NEWSBurkina Faso beat Malawi to claim bronze 04-01-2009
Burkina Faso claimed bronze at the ongoing 8th CAF U-17 Championship in Algeria with a 2-0 victory over Malawi in their third place match on Wednesday in Zeralda. The result was a deserving one for the West Africans who outplayed their Southern African opponents in the encounter. The victory also saw Burkina Faso confirm their dominance over their Malawian counterparts after a similar result in their group phase meeting. After a barren first half, that saw the Stallions miss several goalscoring opportunities, top marksman Ouiya Jerome broke the deadlock a minute from recess. On 69 minutes, Alassane Sango authenticated his side’s lead with a perfect strike from a free-kick The Malawian Junior Flames fought on but the consolation remained elusive till proceedings was brought to an end. This is Burkina Faso’s second bronze at the biennial championship since 2001. The closest they came to annexing the ultimate was a decade ago in Botswana, where they lost to Ghana in the final. The two teams alongside Algeria and Gambia will represent the continent in the FIFA U-17 World Cup slated for Nigeria in October. |
