The final draw for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, Nigeria 2009 comes off Friday, August 7 at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja , Nigeria . The final draw will see 24 teams being housed into six groups for the October 24 to November 15 championships. Africa will be represented by five teams including hosts Nigeria , Gambia , Algeria , Burkina Faso and Malawi for the event that will be taking place for the first time in West Africa . As part of arrangements, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) have extended invitations to celebrated Nigerian footballers some whom cut their football teeth at the juvenile tournament to add colour to the event to be beamed live to millions across the globe. Amongst them are Nduka Ugbade, captain of the 1985 World U-17 winning team, Wilson Oruma and Nwankwo Kanu, both of the class of 1993, Victor Ikpeba, Rashidi Yekini, Tijani Babangida and former Super Falcons queen Mercy Akide. A high powered delegation from FIFA is expected in the capital city of Africa ’s most populous country to conduct the draw. The tourney, the second time Nigeria is hosting a FIFA World Cup after the U-20 Championship 10 years ago will take place in six cities; Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, Kano, Calabar and Ijebu-Ode. Other qualified teams are Iran , Korea Republic , Japan and United Arab Emirates (AFC), Mexico , USA , Costa Rica and Honduras (CONCACAF), Brazil , Argentina , Colombia and Uruguay (CONMEBOL), Germany , Netherlands , Switzerland , Italy , Spain and Turkey (UEFA) and New Zealand (OFC). Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets are the holders after beating Spain on penalties two years ago in South Korea in the 12th edition. Egypt was the first African country to host the biennial event in 1997. |
