Ghana’s Starlets book place for Morocco 2013
Ghana’s Black Starlets have booked their place at next year’s African U-17 Championship after beating South Africa 2-1 in their second leg encounter of the final round qualifier on Saturday in Sekondi.
The result ensured the Starlets completed a double over the Amajimbos and book their place for the continental fiesta scheduled for Morocco, 5-3 on aggregate.
The Ghanaians, despite carrying a 3-2 win from the first leg into the return encounter had to sweat to go through after a spirited performance from the visitors.
As early as the fifth minute, the Starlets were up through Emmanuel Boateng, who scored from the spot. Before half time, Emmanuel Essigba doubled the lead with a superb strike to set the tone for victory.
The South Africans returned strongly but could only manage a consolation through Orlando Pirates star Nhlakanipho Ntuli. The homers backline remained resolute and thwarted all efforts by the visitors as they probed for more goals.
It is the first time since 2007 that Ghana has qualified for the continental cadet championships after missing out on the 2009 (Algeria) and 2011 (Rwanda) editions.
The final tournament has been fixed for 13-27 April in Morocco, where the semi finalists will represent Africa at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Aram Emirates next October.
