NEWSMalawi bows out high 03-26-2009
The Junior Flames of Malawi ended their campaign at the ongoing 8th CAF U-17 Championship in Algeria on a high note with a 5-0 victory over Zimbabwe in their ultimate Group B clash on Thursday in Dar El Beda. A spectacular second half performance by the debuting Junior Flames saw them spank fellow Southern Africans, Zimbabwe by the huge margin to claim their only win at the championship. Both teams played for pride, after losses in their last two games; and the result ensured the Junior Warriors of Zimbabwe bowed out of the competition with the weakest defence after letting in 11 goals in three matches After a barren first half, Andy Simukonda set the tone with a perfect strike on 53 minutes. The last ten minutes of the game produced four goals with Ngalande Robin grabbing a brace. Midfielder Milanzi Luke scored the second goal ten minutes from time before Ngalande increased the tally two minutes later. Substitute Akimu Phiri scored the fourth goal four minutes from time before Ngalande completed his brace with a stoppage time strike. In the other Group B match in Zeralda, Burkina Faso maintained their unbeaten status with a lone goal victory over Niger. Midfielder Yabao Adama’s strike three minutes from time ensured the Stallions finish as group winners with the maximum points. Burkina Faso finished on nine points, Niger on six points, Malawi on three points with Zimbabwe rooted at the bottom pointless. In Sunday’s semi-finals, Burkina Faso will face hosts Algeria in Dar El Beda whilst Gambia squares Niger in Zeralda. |
