NEWSAlgeria, Gambia clash in CAF U-17 final 04-02-2009
Hosts Algeria will seek to become the second hosts to lift the ultimate at the cadet championships when they engage Gambia on Thursday, in the final of the 8th edition in Dar El Beida. Gambia’s Baby Scorpions holds the enviable record as they only side to have achieved that feat, fours years ago after beating Ghana 1-0 in the final. The clash will mark a repeat of the Group “A” encounter which the Baby Scorpions won 2-0 and look poised to replicate that feat to claim their second title. From the onset, the Gambians have made clear their intentions of annexing the ultimate as a way of appeasing their fans after missing out on the last edition two years ago in Togo, despite being the defending champions. Yet to concede at the championships, the Gambians start as favourites and will be cruising to the ultimate should they overcame the huge home support expected for the Young Fennecs. The Fennecs who are making their maiden appearance at the biennial championship have exhibited a performance which makes them a force to reckon with in the near future. The likes of Bendahmane Nadir, Ferkous Houssem Eddine, Bekakchi Ibrahim Belkadi Abderrahmane have emerged amongst the talented players at the championship and the ultimate will definitely be the icing on the cake. The Algerians are very much aware of the attacking prowess of the Baby Scorpions led by Ebrima Bojang, Dawda Ceesay, Matarr Jobe and Alasana Camara; and must devise a strategy to neutralize their efforts, else they will have themselves to blame. The Young Fennecs are also eyeing a place in the history books as the second North African side to win the championship dominated by West African teams, after Egypt in 1997. Whatever the scoreline, the two finalists will join bronze winners, Burkina Faso and Malawi as the continent’s representatives at the FIFA U-17 World Cup slated for Nigeria in October. |
