NEWSCongo beat Young Elephants to take third 01-21-2011
Congo won bronze to end their campaign at the 9th CAF U17 Championships on a high note after a first half equaliser from Samarange Binguila and substitute Kounkou Moise late in the second half helped them silence the Young Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire Cote D’Ivoire 2-1 in their third place ply-off match at the Nyamirambo Regional Stadium in Kigali. Moise, who was on the field of play barely five minutes after going in for Presly Etou in the 80th minute, fired home from inside the box as Ouattara fumbled with the ball; his goalkeeping howler allowing the Congolese to net the match winner. Alain Gouamene’s youngsters took the lead when Congo skipper Noel Jean Yobou Thome headed into his own as he tried to clear a delicious Sanogo Moustapha Ibrahim free-kick. But failure by the Ivoirians to extend their lead with several first half chances going their way gave way to the Congolese to retain hopes of an equaliser. Ivorian Salif Ibrahim Coulibaly wasted a glorious chance when he failed to increase the Elephants tally, goalkeeper Chill Ngakosso saving well to keep the Young Red Devils in the match. Samarange drove in a goal-of-the tournament contender when his ferocious cracker from near the centre line left Ivorian goalie Ouattara Aboubakar with no chance as the clock ticked to within just a minute of the half time break. The second was a well contested affair with either side capable of a winner but glory remained with Congo’s super substitute to drive home the winner. ![]() |
