NEWSIdahor powers Merrikh to Kampala victory 04-17-2009
Sudanese giants, Al Merrikh moved a step closer to their CAF Champions League mini-league participation dreams with a lone goal victory over Ugandan outfit, Kampala City Council in their 1/8th stage first leg clash on Friday. Nigerian-born striker Endurance Idahor’s 54th minute strike gave the Omdurman-based side the crucial victory at the Nakivubo Stadium in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. The victory puts Al Merrikh in a good position towards their maiden appearance at the mini-league phase of the continent’s premier club competition after failed attempts in 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Merrikh, winners of the 1989 edition of the defunct African Cup Winners’ Cup have long been seeking for an opportunity to rob shoulders with the big guns in the elite competition and have subsequently beefed up their squad including the capture of former Enyimba whiz-kid Stephen Worgu. After a barren first half, Idahor, one of three Nigerians in the Merrikh setup struck what turned out to be the winner nine minutes into the second half. The loss is a big blow to the Kasasiro Boys who have set sights on becoming the first Ugandan club to feature at the mini-league stage of the Champions League. The second leg has been scheduled for the Al Merrikh Stadium in Omdurman in a fortnight, with the winner progressing to the last eight. |
