Among the clubs which made the history of African football in the years past, is Tout Puissant(TP) Mazembe of Lubumbashi. The club which was first known as Tout Puissant Englebert falls within the category of clubs among which are Al Ahly, Zamalek, Canon Yaoundé, Hafia of Conakry and Ashanti Kotoko of Kumasi who have all dominated football on the African continent. Their prestige transcended national frontiers and have taken the African game to another level. TP Mazembe was the first club to feature in four succesive African champions cup finals. Al Ahly had to wait for some 35 years before achieving that feat. At the time the Congolese won two and lost two of the finals. Since then the club from Katanga province and the country’s second largets city has played and won only one final, the 1980 African cup winners cup. To diversify its activities at the time students were permitted to play in the newly created football club known as Saint Georges. The team was affiliated to the local league and in its first season emerged third. In 1944, FC St. Georges was rebaptised Saint Paul F.C and several yeras later it became F.C. Englebert named after the main sponsor of the club. At the end of that season the team came out first and did not suffer any losses. In order to immortalize their first triumph the team was later named "Tout Puissant" Englebert. After the independence of Congo, on June 30, 1960, Englebert was restructured and in 1966 won a treble (The national championship, Katanga Cup and the Congo Cup), before moving to the summit of African.
