Heartland FC striker Uche Agba has stated that his side lost out on the Orange CAF Champions League title from the first leg.

The Naze Millionaires’ continental ambitions were undone by an Emmanuel Omodiagbe own goal on 73 minutes as they slumped to lone goal loss that saw TP Mazembe cruised to the ultimate on the away goal rule after 2-2 tie from both legs.

Agba, Heartland’s top scorer in the maiden participation in the club championship with seven goals told cafonline.com that his side’s chances were daunted by slim 2-1 win from the first leg played on a rain-hit pitch at the Dan Ayiam Stadium in Owerri last week.

“Our performance in the first leg didn’t help matters. The rain affected our play and to a large extent our aspirations of lifting the ultimate. We had many chances and failed to make good use of them.”

On Saturday’s game, Agba, knocking at the door of the technical handlers of the Super Eagles with his impressive striking rate in the premier club championship said the odds were against them.

He added that the own goal by Omodiagbe also destabilized them after holding Mazembe gallantly in every department till that period.

“The own-goal we conceded also destabilized our plans. It affected our psyche and our game plan as well.

It was the second time Heartland, formerly called Iwunyanwu Nationale had emerged runners-up in the continental club champions after losing Algerian side Entente Setif in 1988.
