Kenya's Tusker FC will have to beat APR FC of Rwanda in the return-leg of the Orange CAF Champions League if they are to proceed to the next round, after settling to a barren draw in their first-leg encounter at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.

Speedy winger Paul Were could have scored an opener for the Brewers, but his goal was ruled-offside in the early part of the match. It was a well balanced match that saw Tusker's new signing Patrick “Petit” Kagogo squander the best opportunity in the dying minutes. Tusker coach Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo bemoaned the team's performance saying “we deserved victory out of the match. Overall I believe we had several chances of winning the game. The outcome of the match is not what we expected but with the return leg coming in a fortnight’s time we still have the chance of qualifying.”

His counterpart Ernis Bandts was satisfied with the outcome of the match promising to win the return match in Kigali. “We defended well and coming out without conceding a goal is a good result for us. I hope we will be able to complete the job in Kigali,” said the Dutchman.

Both teams were under pressure to deliver with APR coming to Nairobi after failing to qualify to the second round of the African competition in two attempts. But coach Bandts is confident that they will better last year's performance. “We want to go all the way and today's show was a perfect tonic to our fans that we are ready to qualify,” Bandts told cafonline.com after the match.

Tusker started the game forcefully with Dennis Mukaisi and Kagogo threatening APR's goalmouth. Mukaisi, who was making a comeback from injury, hit the woodwork in the 12th minute after Kagogo had delivered a good cross. The APR goalkeeper, who had a great match, was once again forced to block a header from Noah Abich as the brewers threatened for an opener. Abich was once again denied by the woodwork after being put through by Mukaisi. The visitors APR upped the game and launched a series of attacks with their danger man and skipper Oliver Karekezi instrumental. During one such occasion he forced Tusker's goalkeeper Bernard Onyango to make a great save in the 34th minute. Onyango was once again called upon to punch away for a corner as Karekezi threatened again. Both teams will now be fighting it out in Kigali after a fortnight to see which team makes it to the second round of the competition.
