04-28-2012

Berekum Chelsea coach Johannes Van der Pluijm tells Cafonline.com that their Orange CAF Champions League 1/8 th round first leg clash against Coton Sport of Garoua on Sunday means a lot.

Being the final lap before group phase, the Dutch man rates the match as the most important in their campaign. Below are excerpts of the interview;

Cafonline.com: How are you bracing up for the clash with Coton Sport?
Johannes Van der Pluijm: We have been preparing like every other game. We don’t want to put pressure on the players, and want them to have a free mind to play come Sunday at the Golden City Park.

Cafonline.com: You suffered a 1-3 loss to Tema Youth in the league last week. Will the result have an impact on this weekend’s game?
Johannes Van der Pluijm: I don’t think so. We rested some key players for the league game and it also formed part of our training towards the Coton Sport match. We are very much focused on the Orange CAF Champions League. We are involved in three competitions (Ghana Premier League, FA Cup and CAF Champions League) and it is important, you take it match once it comes. Now, the attention is on the Coton Sport game. As always, we want to play to win.

Cafonline.com: What do you know about your opponents?
Johannes Van der Pluijm: I have much information about them. But that doesn’t matter to me much. We have to remain committed and play to the strength of our team.

Cafonline.com: This stage will definitely be tough being the last hurdle to the group phase. How are you preparing for the challenge?
Johannes Van der Pluijm: Our target is the group stage, and to get there we have to win. Football is unpredictable. My advice to my players always is to minimize mistakes at this level of the competition. Be tactically disciplined and take your chances as well.

Cafonline.com: How important is this game to Berekum Chelsea?
Johannes Van der Pluijm: It means a lot for me as a coach, owner, Management and the playing body. If we are able to reach the group phase, it will serve a fantastic achievement for a club like Berekum Chelsea, which is barely three years in the Ghanaian top flight. It will be a huge feat and we are working towards it.
