Dynamos FC crash out of Champions League

Zimbabwe club side Dynamos crashed out of the Orange CAF Champions league after drawing 1-1 with defending champions Esperance in the 1/8^th return leg game played at Rufaro Stadium. At the end of a thrilling match it was the visiting Tunisian side that qualified to the groups stage of the competition leaving Dynamos to drop down to the second tier competition, the Confederation Cup.

The task was always going to be a tall order for home side Dynamos who needed to reverse a six goal deficit from the first leg encounter. Dynamos showed their intent earlier on with several shots at goal made in the first half of the game. Dynamos FC attacked from the first whistle and kept the Esperance defence busy as the Zimbabweans pressed for the goals. Dynamos almost got the opening goal in the 20^th minute when Muparati’s shot hit the cross bar.

The Esperance goalkeeper Ben Charita made sure nothing went past in a period when his side soaked up the pressure. Roderick Mutuma ‘s effort in the 33^rd was ruled out for off-side during a period Dynamos dominated. The Tunisians started the second half with intent and put their noses in front on 51^st minute when Iyan Khaled converted a neatly placed cross from Debali Sameli to score the first goal of the match. Dynamos who have never scored against Esperance in previous meetings brought some urgency to their play as they went in search of an equaliser. Much to the delight of the home fans Denver Mukamba finally broke Dynamos goal jinx when his shot at goals from the edge of the penalty box sailed into the goal in the 80^th minute. Unfortunately for Dynamos this match was to be the last they would play in the African Safari this year. .

Both team coaches made changes as the match petered out to a draw. Esperance moves on to the mini-league stage of the competition while Dynamos will now play in the Orange CAF Confederation Cup. The draw for both continental competitions takes place on Tuesday this week at CAF headquarters in Cairo.
