Sunshine Stars through to Champions League mini-league phase
Nigerian clubside Sunshine Stars booked their place in the Orange CAF Champions League mini-league phase after defeating the visiting Djoliba of Mali 1-0 at home in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria. The two sides played a 1-1 draw in the first leg match a fortnight ago in Bamako, Mali.
The match started with Sunshine taking the attack to the visitors. It quickly became an open game as both sides went in search of goals as they attacked each other. It was not until the 38th minute when the Nigerian side got the only goal of the match from a free kick from about 25 meters from goal which was taken by Izu Azuka. The visitors’ goalkeeper was well beaten had no answer to the shot. The visitors searched for the equalizer but could not break down the resilient defence of the host team. First half ended 1-0 in favour of Sunshine Stars.
The visitors Came back strong from the break and continued to pressurize the Sunshine defence but could not get the equalizer.The host team on the other hand kept on searching for the second goal to seal victory . Djoliba’s Mohamed Oumar Konate was sent off in the dying minute of the game and the match ended 1-0 in favour of Sunshine Stars. The Nigerian side thus qualified for group stage of the Orange CAF Champions League whose draw will be conducted this Tuesday at CAF HQ in Cairo, Egypt .
