Abou Treika leads Ahly into Champions League mini-phase
In a thriller at the Cairo Military Academy Stadium, Egyptian star player Mohamed Abou Treika grabbed a second half hat-trick to give Al Ahly a 3-1 victory over Mali’s Stade Malien and pave way for a place in the Orange CAF Champions’ League group stage.
Ahly came back from a goal down to score three times and secure a 3-2 aggregate win after they lost the first leg with a lone goal fortnight ago in Bamako. Omar Kida put Stade Malien upfront after 18 minutes but Abou Treika scored three times at the 54th, 82nd and 87th minutes to put the record Champions League into Tuesday’s draw for the group stage.
Ahly started the game fast and should have scored at the 3rd minute when Ahmed Fathy’s shot hit the post and returned to Emad Motaeb whose effort also came off the post. Mohamed Barakat’s shot hit Stade Malien’s defender to go wide during a period when the home team attacked ceaselessly. Against the run of play Omar Kida took the lead for the visitors from a counter attack to increase the pressure on the Cairo club.
Ahly manager Manuel Jose made a couple of changes before the break introducing Abou Treiaka and Abdullah El Said for Ahmed Fathy and Mohamed Shawky. El Said could have got the equaliser but his shot was topped by Somaila Diakite between the Malian posts.
In the 52nd minute Abou Treika scored the equaliser from a free kick. He could have doubled the lead two minutes later but his header was stopped by Diakite. Jose made his final change introducing Senegalese Dominique Da Silva for Mohamed Nagy “Geddo” searching for more attacking solutions. In the 81st minute Da Silva’s shot was stopped by a Malian defender’s hand to give away a penalty which Abou Treika converted.
Stade Malien received another blow when Mohamed Koumare received his marching orders for the second yellow card 5 minutes from time. Three minutes later Abou Treika completed his hat-trick when he reacted fastest to a loose ball from a cross inside Stade Mali’s box.
