Tunisian giants, Club Africain displayed a determined output to hold JS Kabylie of Algeria to a one all draw in the first leg 1/16th round clash of the Orange CAF Champions League on Friday. “The Canaries” as the 14-time Algerian champions are nicknamed were cruising to a lone goal victory at the El-Menzah Stadium in Tunis, thanks to Idriss Ech-Chergui opener only for Malian Mohamed Traore to shatter that dream with the equalizer three minutes from time. The encounter that pitted together former winners of the prestigious club competition lived up to its billing as the two sides made clear their intent from the onset. Hosts Club Africain were dealt a major blow in the early stages after defensive duo, Khaled Souissi and Cameroonian-import Alexis Enam Mendomo were given the marching off orders in the 16th and 22nd minutes respectively, yet the “Biancorosso” put up a strong fighting spirit to salvage a draw. With their numerical advantage, JS Kabylie, winners in 1981 and 1990 of the premier continental club competition went ahead on the half-hour mark through France-born forward Ech-Chergui. The Tunisians, also continental Kings 19-years ago resumed strongly and were rewarded with the much needed equalizer late in the game courtesy Traore. In another all-North African clash held at June 11 Stadium in Tripoli, Libya’s Al-Ittihad and Difaa El Jadida of Morocco settled for a one all draw. Striker Ahmed Zuway powered the Libyan champions into the lead on 58 minutes before Malian forward Cheick Oumar Dabo grabbed a consolation for Moroccans on 78 minutes. The second leg matches are scheduled for a fortnight with the winners advancing to the 1/8th round.
