Former African champions ASEC Mimosas and Zamalek booked their places at the next round of the 2011 Orange CAF Champions League after convincing wins over the weekend.
ASEC beat Mauritanian champions ASC SNIM 2-0 in the second leg encounter of the preliminary round in Nouakchott whilst Zamalek saw off Ulinzi Stars of Kenya by a lone goal in the first ever competitive match in Egypt since the political uprising.
The duo claimed back-to-back victories in the encounters rescheduled largely due to the involvement of some players at the recently ended African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Sudan.
For the Ivorians, a goal in each half from Jean-Jacques Bougouhi and Antoine N’gossan was enough to secure a 7-0 aggregate win over the Mauritanian champions.
Elsewhere in Cairo, Mahmoud Abdel Razek ‘Shikabala’ scored the only goal in the second half as the five-time continental kings advanced to the round of 16 on a 5-0 aggregate.
In Dormaa, Ghana champions Aduana crashed out despite managing a lone goal victory over Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca. Midfielder Bernard Dong Bortey scored in the first half, but it was very little to aid their progress after a 0-3 loss from the first leg. The Moroccans confirmed their place at the next round 3-1 on aggregate.
