NEWSSundowns put behind coaching worries to go through 04-06-2009
South African side, Mamelodi Sundowns put behind their recent coaching problems to beat Mauritian side AS Vacoas Phoenix 6-1 and clinch a ticket to the 1/8th stage of the Confederation Cup. The “Brazilians” as they are nicknamed put up a sterling performance that the fans linked to tactical approach of caretaker coach Ted Dumitru, who replaced Frenchman Henri Michel last week to claim that crucial victory. The victory by Sundowns ensured the FIFA 2010 World Cup hosts of a representation in the continental club championship after Supersport United and Ajax Cape Town were bundled out of the prestigious CAF Champions League. A brace from Surprise Moriri and one each from veteran Sibusiso Zuma, Bongane Twala, Innocent Mpangase and Benedict Vilakazi secured victory for Sundowns at the Pilditch Stadium and advance 9-1 on aggregate. There were however no major surprises during the weekend clashes that saw holders CS Sfaxien of Tunisia, E.S. Setif and JSM Bejaia both of Algeria, Egyptian duo; Haras El Hodoud and Enppi, Cameroonian duo, Aigle Royal and Union Douala and Ivorian debutants, JCAT seal 1/8th round berths. At Douala on Saturday, goals from Romeo Mbele and Thierry Epah gave Aigle Royal a 2-0 win over visiting US Ouagadougou, with the Douala-based side advancing 3-2 on aggregate. Twenty-four hours later at the same venue, Union Douala also beat Tourbillon of Chad 3-2 to go through 5-3 on aggregate. Angolan side, Santos edged past USM of Gabon with a 4-2 victory that powered them through 5-2 on aggregate. Holders CS Sfaxien lost 1-2 to Ahly Benghazi of Libya but went through 5-3 on aggregate. Ibrahim Khalil and Nigerian-import Ifeanyi Onigbo scored for the Benghazi-based team while experienced midfielder Issam Merdassi netted for “Black whites.” Ivorian debutants, JCAT complete a double over Satellite FC of Guinea with a 3-1 win in Abidjan to qualify 5-2 on aggregate. Elsewhere in Bamako, goals from Emmanuel Umoh and Aboubacar Tambadou secured a 2-0 win for Stade Malien at the expense of visiting Stade Tunisien. Malien, who snatched a vital barren draw from the first leg advanced 2-0 on aggregate. Egyptian duo, Haras and Enppi squeezed past APR of Rwanda and Caps United on Zimbabwe 2-0 and 2-1 to advance by the same margin on aggregates. Zambian side, Red arrows stunned Ocean Boys of Nigeria with a 5-3 win on penalties in Ughelli after a 2-0 loss during normal tied both legs 2-2. Nigeria’s other representative Bayelsa United pipped 57 Tourbillon by a lone goal to advance 1-0 on aggregate. Earlier On Friday, Algerian duo, ES Setif and JSM Bejaia became the first sides to secure passage to the 1/8th stage. ES Setif, 1998 African champions humbled Libyan minnows, Khalij Sert 5-0 while JSM Bejaia posited a 4-1 win over ASC Yakaar of Senegal. Setif advanced on a 6-0 aggregate while the Bejaia-based club inched through 5-2 on aggregate. At the Stade 8 Mai in Setif, a second-half brace from striker Djediat Lamouri powered the former African champions to the last 16 of the competition they are debuting. Defender Aksas Amine broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark before Abdelmalik Ziaya authenticated his side’s lead a minute from recess. Djediat made it three 60 seconds on before completing his brace eight minutes later. Seven minutes from time, Mohamed Segeur completed the routing with the fifth goal to see his side through. At the Northern Algerian province on Bejaia, a spectacular second half performance secured JSM a ticket to the next round of the second tier continental club championship. After a barren first half, Ahcène Lahmar scored the opener four minutes past the hour mark before Zerdab Zahir doubled the tally five minutes later. Midfielder Amine Megateli registered the third goal on 70 minutes before Kouider Boukessessa sealed victory with a superb strike three minutes from time. ASC Yakaar was gifted a consolation on stoppage time after defender Amar Belakhdar inadvertently diverted a shot into his own net.
