NEWSEmphatic wins take Enppi, Setif closer to next round 04-19-2009
North African duo, Enppi of Egypt and E.S. Setif of Algeria took giant steps towards qualification to the next round of the Confederation Cup courtesy emphatic wins during the 1/8th round first leg matches. Enppi thrashed Zambian side Red Arrows 4-0 on Saturday while Setif managed a similar feat over Recreativo de Libolo of Angola on Friday. With the wide margin victories, the two clubs have a foot at the next stage while awaiting the outcome of the second leg in a fortnight. In Egypt, a second half brace from Ahmed Raouf powered the Egyptian Petroleum and Processing Industries sponsored club to their biggest win of their continental campaign this season. Ayman Saied had opened the scores on 21 minutes before Adel Mostafa doubled the lead five minutes into the second half. At Setif, two goals in each half were all the former Arab Champions League winners needed to clinch victory. Nabil Hemani, Lamouri Djediat and Abdelmalek Ziaya were all on target and Manuel Machado added to his side’s woes with an own goal. Algeria’s other representative JSM Bejaia managed a lone goal victory over Stade Malien of Mali with Belkeir Mohamed Amine’s 75 minute goal separating the two sides. Elsewhere, South African side Mamelodi Sundowns came from behind to hold ASV Club of DR Congo to a 2-2 draw in Pretoria. Bongeli Lofo and Ilunga Diba gave the visitors a two-goal lead with efforts on ninth and 20th minutes respectively before a spectacular second half performance from the “Brazilians” saw them draw equal. Substitute Kurt Lentjies reduced the deficit five minutes past the hour mark before Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma struck the equalizer in stoppage time with a spectacular scissors kick. At Douala, Emmanuel Ilog’s half time strike from the spot gave Aigle Royal of Cameroon a lone goal victory over visiting Bayelsa United of Nigeria. The second leg matches have been fixed for May 1-3 with the winners facing the losers of the Champions League 1/8th stages for a place at the mini-league stage.
