Enppi, Stade Malien claim next round berth
05-02-2009

Egyptian side Enppi and Stade Malien of Mali sealed places at the next round of the Confederation Cup on Saturday.

Enppi went through 4-3 on aggregate despite a 0-3 loss in Lusaka to Zambian side Red Arrows whilst Stade Malien advanced 13-12 on penalties against JSM Bejaia of Algeria after a 1-0 win during normal time tied both legs one all.

But it was the marathon penalty shootout in Bamako that caught the headlines and   finally ensured at least a representation for Mali in the continental club championships.

With a lone goal lead from the first leg, JSM Bejaia held on firmly to that solitary lead till the dying embers of the game when Emmanuel Umoh snatched the winner that pushed the tie to penalties.

In the Zambian capital, a hat-trick from Timothy Mbewe was not enough to see Red Arrows through. Mbewe scored on 39, 61 and 90 minutes but fell short of the four goals needed.
The winners will face the losers of the Champions League 1/8th stages for a place at the mini-league stage.
