NEWSEntente Setif reach Confed Cup final 10-17-2009
Algeria champions, Entente Setif reached the final of the Orange Confederation Cup with a lone goal victory over Nigerian champions Bayelsa United in their semifinal second leg clash on Friday. Hitman Abdelmalik Ziaya scored on the only goal of the encounter as Entente Setif inched through 2-1 on aggregate. It marks the four-time Algerian champions first ever appearance in the final of a major continental competition since winning the defunct African Cup of Champion Clubs in 1988. The result ultimately killed off the continental ambitions of the West African debutants, who were hoping to complete a Nigeria double in the continental club championships following Heartland’s qualification to the final of the Orange champions League last week. After settling for a one all draw in the first leg held in Oghara a fortnight ago, Bayelsa appeared poised to force a bitter pill down the throats of their visitors only for a Ziaya 10th minute effort to completely neutralize that dream. Ziaya’s goal erupted the May 8, 1945 Stadium in the Northern Algerian city of Setif, as the local side held on to the thin lead to zoom into the final. The sole North African side in the continental series will only know their opponents in the grand finale on Sunday when Stade Maliem of Mali host Enppi of Egypt in the other semifinal second leg clash in Bamako. The first leg played in Cairo a fortnight ago ended 2-2. |
