Stade Malien made history by becoming the first Malian side to win a continental silverware after beating Entente Setif of Algeria 3-2 on penalties on Saturday in the second leg final of the 2009 Orange Confederation Cup.
Captain cum goalkeeper Diakité Soumbeyla was the hero of the Malian giants by saving three kicks during the penalty shootout as Les Blancs cruised onto the ultimate in the second tier continental club championship. Diakité who had been on a virtual holiday proved his prowess during the shootout, with three superb saves to seal his place in the Malian football history.
With a two goal deficit from the first leg, Les Blancs fought hard from the onset with regular raids led by Kone Oumar and Sissoko Abdoulaye into the visitors half. Backed by a packed crowd at the Modibo Keita Stadium in Bamako, the Malians failed to break through the iron-clad defence of the Algerian champions which revolved around captain Raho Slimane and Diss Smain. The absence of midfielder Lemmouchia Khaled and striker Abdelmalek Ziaya had a telling effect on the play of the Black Eagles, who adopted a defensive approach. With no clear chance at goal during the first half, the hosts resumed with the same momentum in their quest to annul the two-goal lead from the first leg.
Their efforts yielded results on 52 minutes as striker Coulibaly Bakary broke the deadlock from a goalmouth action to set the stadium alive. Entente Setif captain Raho in an attempt to clear his line saw his kick bounce off Coulibaly into his own net. Three minutes on, the hosts were rewarded a penalty after Raho was adjudged to have foul his marker in the penalty area. The resultant spot kick was expertedly converted by Ousmane Bakayoko who shot pass goalkeeper Mohamed Ferradj. Moments after the second goal which kept the tie at 2-2, the visitors surprisingly revised their tactics by making inroads upfront while Les Blancs multiplied in attack in search for the winner.
The last quarter belonged to the Algerians, and Hemani Nabil made a mess of a golden opportunity that befell him after beating an offside trap in added on time. With only Stade Malien goalie to beat, Hemani shot wide taking the game to penalties.
During penalties, Stade Malien goalie saved kicks by Belkaid Farouk, Segeur Mohamed and Djediat Lamouri, whilst Hadj Aissa and Diss Smain scored for the Black Eagles.
Issiaka Eliassou, Coulibaly Moussa and Coulibaly Bakary scored for Les Blancs as they cruised to victory despite Ferradj saving Kone’s kick.
The whole stadium erupted into ecstasy after Diakite saved Djediat’s kick with officials and players of Stade Malien joining the fans to celebrate the historic feat. CAF Vice-President Seyi Memene handed the trophy to Les Blancs captain Diakite amidst cheers and chants from all present at the Modibo Keita Stadium. Stade Malien will also receive 660,000 US Dollars for their feat and will also face Orange CAF Champions League winners, T.P. Mazembe of DR Congo in next year’s Orange Super Cup.
