JS Kabylie in difficulties after a home defeat
JS Kabylie lost another three points in the Orange CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-1 defeat on Friday evening at the 5th July stadium in Algiers against Sunshine Stars of Nigeria. It was a huge disappointment for JS Kabylie fans who came out in numbers to support their team in spite of divided opinions during the match.
JS Kabylie started well, making several attacks but the Nigerian team operated on counter-attacking football. Following a Sunshine attack in the 16th minute, Douicher brought down his opponent in the penalty box but the Kenyan referee waved play on . Kabylie play maker, Sad Tedjar unleashed a shot which Nigerian keeper parried for a corner. New Kabylie recruit, Hanifi opened the score in the 19th minute after benefitting from a missed header by Boulemdais from a corner. JS Kabylie’s joy after the goal ended after the Nigerian side equalised in the 36th minute through Eboh who went past the Algerian defence before beating goalkeeper Asselah. The Nigerian goal dampened the spirits of the JSK players who thought they would be going for half time with a goal advantage.
The standard of the game dropped in the second half as the Nigerian side relied on counter-attacks, seeming satisfied with a draw and grabbing an away point. Inah missed a clear opportunity in the 49th minute against Asselah. A less inspired Kabylie also missed scoring opportunities through Boulemdais and Tedjar. The Nigerians surprise everyone when 15 minutes to the end of the game they scored a second goal. Alaba received a pass, unleashed a shot which Asselah could only deflect to a Nigerian player who scored from the rebound . In spite of the multiple attempts by Ziad, Tedjar and Hanifi, JS Kabylie conceded a 2-1 home defeat.
Sunshine Stars, with two victories from as many matches , confirmed on the pitch what their coach, Gbenga Ogunbote said before the kick off of the second phase of the Orange Confederation Cup ; « we are aiming for the semi-final ». Meanwhile, the Algerian representative has started poorly with two defeats in two matches. After the second playing day, they are now six points behind Sunshine Stars.
