Mendomo hands Club Africain first leg cushion
Cameroon-born defender Alexis Enam Mendomo powered Tunisian side Club Africain to a lone goal victory over MAS Fes of Morocco in the first leg of the 2011 Orange CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday in Rades.
Mendomo scored what turned out to be the match-winner on seven minutes to hand his side the advantage ahead of the second leg in Fes in a fortnight.
The 24-year old dreadlocked was the star man for the 1991 African champions in a game that established forwards Ezechiel Ndouassel and Zouheir Dhaouadi drew blank in front of goal.
Inspired the performance of city rivals, Esperance in the Orange CAF Champions League, Club Africain were looking forward to a much convincing result to make the second leg a mere formality.
However, they will have to wait for the next two weeks to realize the outcome of their aspirations. The encounter was watched by an expectant crowd mostly clad in the red and white colours of the 12-time Tunisian league champions, who cheered the team on from the blast of the whistle till the end.
Just as both teams were struggling in search of their rhythm, Mendomo carved out a spectacular strike that beat MAS Fes goalie Anas Zniti for the only goal of the match.
The hosts dominated possession and were gifted with scoring opportunities but failed to convert them into goals.
On the hour mark, the visitors were dealt a huge blow after defender Samir Zekroumi was given the marching off orders after a tackle on an opponent.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, MAS Fez forced their hosts to their half during the second half but lacked the cutting edge upfront. Tried as they did, the much needed equalizer never came as Club Africain survived their attacks and marched on to victory.
The second leg will take place on December 4 at the Complex Sportif de Fes in Fes.
